TikTok bad at culling US election misinformation ads

TikTok’s algorithms are very good at finding videos to keep people glued to their phone screens for hours on end. What they are not so good at, a new report has found, is detecting ads that contain blatant misinformation about US elections.
That’s despite TikTok having banned all political advertisements from its platform in 2019.

The report raises fresh concerns about the wildly popular video-sharing app’s ability to catch election falsehoods at a time when a growing number of young people use it not just for entertainment, but also for finding information. The nonprofit Global Witness and the Cybersecurity for Democracy team at New York University published the report Friday.

Global Witness and NYU tested whether some of the most popular social platforms — Facebook, YouTube and TikTok — can detect and take down false political ads targeted at US voters ahead of next month’s midterm elections. The watchdog group has done similar tests in Myanmar, Ethiopia, Kenya and Brazil with ads containing hate speech and disinformation, but this is the first time it has done so in the United States.

covers come off ultra-futuristic electric SUV

Polestar’s new SUV has been revealed in all its electric glory. And, in keeping with the company’s keenness on uncomplicated monikers, it is simply called the 3.

Details were scant in advance of the launch, with a single teaser image released a few weeks beforehand. However, those present at the global unveiling were able to enjoy the sleek and distinctly modern-looking vehicle in all its glory, which will certainly stand out from its boxier competitors in any SUV identity parade.

In fact, design is integral to the character of the 3.

Unlike some electric cars, there is no fake grille on the 3, with the front being dominated by what Polestar aficionados are calling the "Thor’s hammer headlight design".

Iranian troops working with Russians in Crimea to strike Ukraine with drones, US says

Iranian troops have been training Russian forces in Crimea in the use of Tehran-made drones to strike Ukrainian cities including Kyiv, White House National Security spokesman John Kirby confirmed on Thursday.

He added that the US is currently no longer focusing on diplomacy with Iran over a proposed new nuclear deal.

“We can confirm that Russian military personnel that are based in Crimea have been piloting Iranian [drones], using them to conduct strikes across Ukraine including strikes against Kyiv in just recent days,” Mr Kirby told reporters.

“We assess that Iranian military personnel were on the ground in Crimea and assisted Russia in these operations.”
