Russia-Ukraine live: Kyiv rules out ceasefire

  • Biden signs $40bn aid package for Ukraine
  • Zelenskyy says only diplomacy can end Ukraine war
  • Erdogan discusses Nato concerns with Sweden and Finland
  • Russia declares travel ban on 963 Americans including Biden and Blinken
  • Russia’s Gazprom halts gas supply to Finland
Ukraine ruled out a ceasefire or concessions to Moscow while Russia intensified an offensive in the eastern Donbas region and stopped sending gas to Finland in its latest salvo in response to Western sanctions and its deepening international isolation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the situation in Donbas is “extremely difficult” but is confident that Ukraine’s army can overcome Russian advances.

He also said on Saturday that the Ukraine war can only be resolved through “diplomacy” amid a deadlock in negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow.

US President Joe Biden has signed the $40 billion aid package passed by Congress. Its passage by overwhelming margins in the Senate on Thursday and the House last week was seen as a sign of popular support in the US for Ukraine’s efforts against Russia’s invasion.
Ukraine ruled out a ceasefire or concessions to Moscow while Russia intensified an offensive in the eastern Donbas region.

The Kremlin also stopped sending gas to Finland in its latest response to western sanctions amid its deepening international isolation.

Polish President Andrzej Duda, who met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv last month, was back to address the Ukrainian Parliament on Sunday as the first foreign leader to do so in person.

After ending weeks of resistance by the last Ukrainian fighters in the strategic south-eastern port of Mariupol, Russia is waging a major offensive in Luhansk, one of two provinces in Donbas.

Russian-backed separatists already controlled large parts of Luhansk and neighbouring Donetsk before Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, but Moscow wants to seize the last remaining Ukrainian-held territory in the region.

On the Donetsk frontline, Russian forces were trying to break through Ukrainian defences to reach the administrative borders of the Luhansk region.

Further north, they continued heavy shelling of Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk, Ukraine’s general staff said in its daily update on Sunday.

Shyam Maheshwari, in China there has been and have nots regarding credit

Shyam Maheshwari is a Founder and Partner at ARES SSG. He is also an Associate Member at The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and on the board of various companies. According to Shyam Maheshwari, the capex cycle is not driven by the banking system than the alternative. He identifies pockets of opportunities across the broad spectrum of credit.

Shyam Maheshwari is Associate Member at The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and on the board of 5 other companies. In his past career Mr. Maheshwari occupied the position of Partner at SSG Capital Management Ltd (Private Equity) and was responsible for the company’s investment activities in India. He has 17 years of experience in the deal sourcing, analysis and investing industry. Shyam Maheshwari studied at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai for his graduation and Indian Institute of Management Bangalore for his post graduate MBA.

In Shyam Maheshwari’s point of view, the capex cycle is not driven by the banking system than the alternative. “The non-bank, or the alternative bank have to remain alternative and cannot come into main stream, but so far as of now there is an opportunity of next 3, 4 or 5 years where the incremental growth will be in the non-banks than the bank and this is an opportunity”, Mr. Maheshwari says.

According to Shyam Maheshwari, in China there has been haves and have nots regarding credit. “Some people get credit even though there is decent liquidity and some sectors and some companies don’t get credit. While in India for sure it is a micro issue where the banks are not lending at all and therefore any growth opportunity by acquisition, growth or capex has to be funded from the non-bank for the time being”, Maheshwari explains.

Shyam Maheshwari also shares his perspective on the evolving global credit landscape to identify pockets of opportunity across the broad spectrum of credit. “The world’s central banks have been a major boon to investors as they’ve pumped unprecedented amounts of liquidity into the global financial system since the 2008 crash, says Shyam. According to him, this has allowed many companies to push out maturities and save on interest expenses. On the flip-side, investors have also been pushed into riskier assets and as new, but sometimes less experienced competitors, such as corporations backed by large balance sheets, have entered the market.

Talking about funding given to corporates, Shyam Maheshwari thinks that it is all about statistics. He explains that when it is granular and similar, it works but when it becomes large and bespoke, it won’t. Individual large corporates which cannot get funding from platforms is because size will be too difficult to absorb and the analytics of automation won’t work. He identifies that granular and small lending works fine but not large lending or large loans.

According to Shyam Maheshwari SSG, in India there is a demand for credit but it is self-fulfilling because there is a demand for credit and there is a demand for growth. And that part is currently on top of bank lending which again currently is being fulfilled by trust loans or alternative lenders or financial companies. “The banking sector, because they are government owned, will remain the Bedrock for the capex cycle. Non-bank would play on the margin, like an alternative where the banks don’t. This includes consumers, real estate, regulatory issues on various sectors and policy changes as they come along the way”, Shyam Maheshwari explains. Shyam Maheshwari concludes with his expectation that this will normalize the credit demand of the Indian economy.

CBI's New Corruption Case Against Lalu Yadav, Family Members, Searches On

New Delhi, Patna:

Weeks after he was granted bail in a fodder scam case, Lalu Prasad Yadav has been charged in a fresh corruption case over alleged irregularities in recruitment between 2004 and 2009 when he was Railway Minister.

Besides Mr Yadav, his wife and former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi, daughter and Rajya Sabha MP Misa Bharti and other family members have been named accused in the new case, sources said.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today started searches at 15 locations linked to the Rashtriya Janata Dal patriarch, including his residences.

In the new case, the CBI has alleged that Mr Yadav and his family members received land and properties as bribe for giving out railway jobs.

The 73-year-old veteran leader walked out of jail last month after the Jharkhand High Court granted him bail in the ₹ 139 crore Doranda Treasury scam case. A CBI special court had in February sentenced him to five years in prison in the case. He was also fined ₹ 60 lakh.

The treasury scam case was the fifth fodder scam case in which Mr Yadav was convicted.

Visuals showed police personnel at the Patna residence of Mr Yadav's wife and former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi during the raids this morning.

RJD legislator Dr Mukesh Roshan said Mr Yadav is in Delhi and his son and party leader Tejashwi Yadav is also away. "Those in power are targeting Lalu Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav because they are aware of their popularity," he alleged.

Cannes 2022: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Wears A Desi Designer On The Red Carpet And It's Not Sabyasachi

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made her second red carpet appearance at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday and it was almost as eye-popping as her first. Ash, veteran of the Cannes red carpet, showed up wearing a pleated, architectural gown in designer Gaurav Gupta’s signature style. The dress, in pale pink streaked with silver, featured a design element that rose up from the shoulders and formed a sort of giant halo behind Aishwarya’s head. As far as dramatic gowns go, this one is fairly high-octane. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, attending a screening of the film Armageddon Time, accessorized the maximalist look with minimal jewellery, soft makeup and a simple hairdo.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been pulling rabbits out of hats, fashionably speaking – all her looks so far at Cannes this year have not only been high-impact but also well out of her comfort zone of lacy Elie Saab and mermaid silhouettes. Also can we say that it’s refreshing to see an Indian designer that isn’t Sabyasachi on the Cannes red carpet.

Aishwarya’s first red carpet look was a black Dolce and Gabbana ballgown with 3D flowers attached; the over-the-top ensemble left the Internet divided.

Aishwarya’s very first outfit at this year’s Cannes Film Festival was also polarizing – a fuchsia pink Valentino pantsuit with matching platform shoes. It received little love on social media.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been attending the Cannes Film Festival for 20 years, most of them as an ambassador for cosmetics brand L’Oreal. Like previous years, her daughter Aaradhya has accompanied her as has husband Abhishek Bachchan.

The Indian contingent at Cannes this year is fairly sizeable – apart from Aishwarya, Deepika Padukone is there as a jury member and also attended the Armageddon Time screening. Actresses Pooja Hegde and Tamannaah Bhatia are also at Cannes as are Hina Khan, Helly Shah, AR Rahman, R Madhavan and other stars.

The Cannes red carpet returns in all its glamour as the biggest stars in the world head to the French Riviera, where the 75th edition of the world-famous film festival is taking place. Oscar-winning actress Julia Roberts made an appearance at premiere of director James Gray’s ‘Armageddon Time', a semi-autobiographical film presented in official competition.

"Tesla On My Mind 24/7": Elon Musk Amid Concerns Over Twitter Distraction

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Thursday that “Tesla is on my mind 24/7,” trying to soothe investor worries about him being distracted by a Twitter deal that has depressed stocks at the electric car company.

Posting a picture tweet showing a woman (Tesla) who is upset by her boyfriend (Elon) checking out another woman (Twitter), he said, “So may seem like below, but not true.” “To be clear, I’m spending <5% (but actually) of my time on the Twitter acquisition. It ain’t rocket science!” he tweeted. “Yesterday was Giga Texas, today is Starbase. Tesla is on my mind 24/7.”

Tesla this year opened its new car factory in Texas, and Musk’s rocket company SpaceX has a launch site known as Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas.

Tesla shares have lost one third of their value since the billionaire disclosed his stake in Twitter in early April and sold $8.5 billion worth of Tesla stocks in a move seen to help finance his $44-billion Twitter deal.

Further hurting stocks are China lockdown measures that dampened Tesla’s production and an exclusion of Tesla from a widely-followed S&P sustainability index.

Putin's daughter flew to Munich over 50 times in 2 years to meet partner Zelensky:

Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s daughter Katerina Tikhonova, a former acrobatic dancer, is apparently in a relationship with a Munich-based ballet dancer Igor Zelensky, unrelated to the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, though the duo share the same surname.

Putin’s daughter and Igor Zelensky might also have a child. Between 2018 and 2019, Putin’s daughter flew to Munich more than 50 times, a joint investigation by independent Russian media outlet iStories and German magazine Der Spiegel has revealed. Every time, Katerina flew on state chartered flights in the company of employees from Putin’s own presidential security service.

Always shrouded in secrecy, Putin’s personal life and family have come on the radar more after Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine that started in February.

That Putin’s daughter has the record of so many trips to a European country while she might be indeed in a relationship with a dancer who stays in Munich has been criticised by the western media, given Putin’s strong stance against the West.

The investigation has leaked a cache of documents relating to a series of flights between Moscow and Munich, including the passport of a then two-year-old girl, who might be the ‘previously unknown granddaughter’ of Putin.

Who is Igor Zelensky, the probable partner of Putin’s daughter?
According to reports, Igor Zelensky is a 52-year-old dancer who was the director of the Bayerisches Staatsballet until April this year. “He stepped down from his role on 4 April citing “private family reasons”, having failed to react to calls to condemn Putin’s war of aggression in Ukraine,” a Guardian report said. Zelensky has a job on the supervisory board of Russia’s National Cultural Heritage Foundation. “Leading a ballet troupe requires absolute concentration and efficiency. At present, however, personal, family matters require my full attention and time, which is incompatible with my activities as a ballet director in Munich…Now my family needs my support,” he said at the time of his resignation, as reported by Newsweek.

Where are Putin’s daughter and her partner?

The investigators said the current whereabouts of Katerina and Tikhonova are not known. Journalists went to Zelensky’s Munich address but only found his ex-wife, Yana Serebriakova, a former ballet dancer.
